Newcomers’ Employment Challenges

High Unemployment Rate

In the first quarter of 2021, the unemployment rate increased for both recent and established immigrants. In particular, very recent immigrants had the highest unemployment rate (10.8%) (Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, 2012-22).

High Level of Under-Employment

People from migrant backgrounds are likely to trap in low-paid, informal jobs which fail to develop and fully utilize their skills and capacities (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2014).

High level of Vulnerability in Precarious Work

Immigrants are disproportionately vulnerable workers whose precarious work is characterized by low wages, inadequate hours of work, few or no benefits, less job security, and minimal control over their working conditions (Statistics Canada, 2005).
