Tip 1 – Understand yourself and understand HR
Different jobs require different skills and personalities. Get honest advice to see if you will like an HR career. Be informed as to what the job entails, and what skills are needed.
Tip 2 – Consider a certificate in HR
Programs offering work integrated learning can help develop work experience. Some programs offer courses which help with professional accreditation.
Tip 3 – Consider getting a professional designation
In Ontario, the CHRP designation may help demonstrate interest & competency in HR, allowing access to roles where it is listed as a requirement. In the rest of Canada, the similarly-named CPHR designation may help.
Tip 4 – Remember that administrative roles may lead to HR roles
Keep an open mind! Entry-level roles in administration may be upgraded to HR jobs later on.
Tip 5 – Meet with people working in Human Resources
Find a mentor. Seek out networking groups, in person and e.g. on LinkedIn. Ask professionals for coffee-chats. Get a professional photo. Ensure LinkedIn profile is professional.
Like any field, HR can be challenging to break into. Keep up your spirits, and rely on family and friends.
